Learn to Skate FAQs
What is my time commitment for Learn to Skate?
Learn to Skate offers 5 sessions throughout the year: four sessions during the school year and one session in the summer. Each session typically lasts 5 weeks. During the school-year sessions (1-4), classes are usually held on Wednesday nights, Friday evenings, or Saturday mornings, and you choose one day to attend for the duration of the session. Summer Session 5 may vary in its schedule. Each class is 30 minutes long and includes supervised instruction from our Learn to Skate coaches.
What should I wear to class?
Your comfort and safety are important to us! We recommend wearing leggings or sweatpants along with a t-shirt. It's also a good idea to bring a removable jacket or hoodie and a hat or earmuffs for layering, so you can adjust as you warm up. Don’t forget to bring gloves for both warmth and protection. Helmets are welcome if you feel they’re necessary. Please avoid wearing snow pants, bib overalls, or bulky winter coats, as these can restrict your movement.
Do I need to bring my own skates?
No, you don’t need to bring your own skates for Snowplow Sam LTS through Basic/Adult 6! Your Learn to Skate registration fee includes skate rentals from the Ames/ISU Ice Arena. Arrive 15-20 minutes before your class begins, head to the skate rental desk near the concession stand, and pick up a pair of skates. After each lesson, be sure to return the skates before you leave.
Once you reach more specialized Learn to Skate levels, you will be asked to provide your own skates. Pre-Freeskate--Freeskate 6 require a figure skate while Hockey 1-4 require hockey skates. Correct equipment helps students be more successful as they increasingly specialize.
Do you offer lessons for adults too?
Absolutely! We run a class for adults during each session.
Do you offer lessons aimed at hockey players?
Absolutely! Check out our schedule to see when hockey-specific classes are offered.
