Welcome to Coaching at AFSC
|
At Ames Figure Skating Club, we believe coaching is one of the most important parts of a skater’s journey. Whether your skater is just starting out or working toward testing and competition goals, our coaches provide the expertise, support, and encouragement to help them grow.
All AFSC coaches are independent professionals, offering private lessons tailored to each skater’s goals, style, and level. From developing strong fundamentals to mastering advanced elements, our coaches are here to guide every glide, jump, and spin. We encourage families to explore our coaching bios, ask questions, and find the right coaching fit. If you’re unsure where to begin, we’re happy to help connect you. Let’s get skating! |
Coaching FAQs
|
Who are the AFSC coaches?
AFSC works with a roster of professional figure skating coaches who are independent contractors. Many of them have years of experience teaching skaters of all ages and skill levels. All Ames Figure Skating Club coaches meet rigorous qualifications to ensure the highest level of instruction. Coaches are required to maintain the following:
These qualifications ensure that our coaches provide safe, professional, and high-quality instruction to support skaters in reaching their full potential. Are coaching fees included in Club Ice or Learn to Skate costs?
Learn to Skate group classes include instruction from a qualified coach during your skater’s class time—so yes, your skater will have a coach during group lessons. However, private coaching—one-on-one instruction outside of group class—is not included in Learn to Skate, Club Ice, or competition fees. If your skater is interested in private lessons to accelerate progress, prepare for tests or competitions, or get more personalized attention, that arrangement is made directly with the coach and comes with an additional cost. Are Learn to Skate coaches and Club coaches the same?
Not always. Some Learn to Skate coaches also teach privately with the Club, but not all do. Only approved Club coaches are allowed to give private lessons during Club Ice, which is ice time reserved for AFSC members to practice, take lessons, and prepare for tests or competitions. When should I consider hiring a private coach?
Private coaching is a good option once a skater wants to advance beyond group lessons, pursue U.S. Figure Skating tests, or prepare for competitions. If your skater is motivated and ready for more individualized attention, it may be time to start! How do I choose a coach for my skater?
Selecting the right coach is essential for your skating progress. Here are some tips to help you make an informed decision:
Do coaches travel to competitions or test sessions?
Yes, many AFSC coaches attend competitions and test sessions with their skaters. Be sure to discuss their availability and associated travel or coaching fees in advance. If a skater’s primary coach can’t attend, another AFSC coach is usually willing to help put the skater on the ice and provide basic supervision—just be sure to arrange this in advance. What if I want to switch coaches or have a concern?
If you're considering switching coaches, it's important to handle the process professionally and respectfully. We encourage open communication and recommend speaking with your current coach first. If you have concerns about your coaching arrangement—or need support navigating a change—you can reach out to the Coaching Liaison. AFSC is committed to supporting positive experiences for both skaters and coaches and will help mediate concerns confidentially and respectfully. Can a visiting professional coach a Skater on club Ice?
Yes—but there are a few important steps. Visiting professionals (coaches who are not on AFSC’s approved coaching list) must request permission in advance from the Board. They must also submit required documentation, including proof of liability insurance and compliance with U.S. Figure Skating’s coaching requirements. Approval must be granted before they can coach on Club Ice or at any AFSC-sanctioned event. Review AFSC's full visiting and invited professionals policy. |
